What is Hair Toner?

Coloring your hair is a fun way to get a new look or make a statement. Whether you dye your hair at home or rely on your favorite hairstylist for that perfect color, your hair might benefit from using a toner. If you’re not familiar with what that is, you’re not alone. Here’s what you need to know about hair toner and how it can help your hair look its best.

What is Hair Toner?

Hair toner is a type of non-permanent hair color used to change the overall tone of the hair and not necessarily the shade itself. Tone refers to whether your hair is warm, cool, or neutral. In hair color terms, warm tends to be “golden,” while cool is referred to as “ashy.”

Toner is commonly used when a person is bleaching their hair. For example, black or dark brown hair can come out looking quite orange after being bleached; a toner will counteract that warm color and remove the brassiness. To do that, a cool toner is used. For blondes with dull, ashy hair, a golden toner can help add warmth.

Essentially, a toner is used to offer subtle alterations to a hair color without changing it entirely.

How Is Toner Applied?

When a professional apply toner after a coloring or bleaching session, it will be used at the wash station. Usually, toner will be applied all over, but in the case of highlights or color chunking, sections of the hair may be toned and wrapped in foil.

The entire process can take up to 20 minutes, depending on your type of hair and the process that was used.

How Long Does Toner Last?

Hair toner is a semi- or demi-permanent treatment, which means it won’t last forever. Usually, you can expect your hair toner to last four to eight weeks. Washing frequently will give the toner a shorter lifespan, so try to avoid shampooing every day. Ask your colorist how long it will be between treatments, especially if you have very bleached hair.

Because toner isn’t permanent, it generally uses a more gentle formula. Re-toning, when you need it, shouldn’t damage your hair as long as you take care of it. Again, avoid over-washing and frequent heat styling to keep your hair in good shape.

Can I Tone My Own Hair?

It is usually not recommended to tone your hair at home. Toning requires pretty deep knowledge of color theory, so if you aren’t sure what you’re doing, you could make matters worse. The wrong toner can make your recently bleached hair even brassier.

However, toning shampoo is an easy-to-use method that will help keep your hair toned for longer between professional treatments.
