No matter what color your hair is, color-treated hair needs a little extra TLC if you want your color to last as long as possible. Letâ%u20AC%u2122s face it: if youâ%u20AC%u2122re spending a lot of money on your hair, you donâ%u20AC%u2122t want it fading after a few short weeks because you didnâ%u20AC%u2122t take care of it properly. If you want to keep your color looking great for weeks, give these tips a try!
Wait a full 72-hours before shampooing
When coloring your hair, the cuticle layer of your hair opens to allow the color to penetrate the hair shaft and can take a few days to close again. When you wash your hair within this period, it can cause the color to be washed out of your hair. Waiting a full 72-hours before shampooing will give your hair time to soak in as much color as possible.
Use a sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner
Sulfate is present in numerous shampoos and soaps and is the ingredient that causes the product to foam up. Sulfate in shampoos and conditioners can strip the natural moisture and oils from the hair and if your hair is color treated, the sulfate can even strip the color out of your hair. A sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, such as All-Nutrient, will help your color from fading quickly.
Use lukewarm water when washing your hair
Hot water will open the cuticles of your hair, causing the color to wash out when youâ%u20AC%u2122re shampooing. When you go to wash your hair, turn the water down to lukewarm temperatures to avoid the color from washing out of your hair. Once youâ%u20AC%u2122re done rinsing, turn the temperature back up.
Spread out washes
Spreading out the time between washes is extremely beneficial for your hair and will leave it soft, shiny, and will allow it to grow faster. For color treated hair, spreading out washes can also reduce the amount of fading from washing too often. If you hate going a day without washing your hair, utilize dry shampoo to hold you over until your next wash.
Use leave-in conditioner
Leave-in conditioner provides your hair with the extra hydration and protection that it desperately needs after being color-treated. A leave-in condition will also leave your hair smooth from the extra hydration.
Avoid chlorine
Chlorine is extremely damaging to your hair and can cause it to become dry and dull. Those with blonde hair are more susceptible to damage due to the light pigmentation of the hair and even causing it to turn green.
