Changing Your Hair Color

It has been on every personâ%u20AC%u2122s mind at least once in their life, and thatâ%u20AC%u2122s whether they should dye their hair or not! At Bella Salon we offer many color options and methods in coloring your hair. Here are some facts on what entails when you dye your hair since it is quite the process!

Permanent Hair Color- This process is used when bleaching or lighting your hair. With this method, it will take only two steps but is the most harmful. The first step is to apply the permanent hair dye on to your hair evenly which will cause the ammonia, the alkalizing agent in the dye, to open up your hair cuticles and let the dye in. Then the oxidizing agent, peroxide, is applied to penetrate into the hair cortex and remove your original hair color (melanin). The melanin is extracted until you have the lighter shade you desired for your hair. After this process is finished, the new color is left on your hair cortex giving you a brand new hair color to rock! To protect and seal your hair cuticles and also your new color, conditioner is used after washing out the dye. If you use this process too much you are at risk of damaging and drying out your hair.

Semi-Permanent Hair Color- Like its name, this coloring process is only permanent for up to 4 to 6 weeks. This method is less damaging to your hair than going permanent since it does not contain ammonia or peroxide making it a much more gentle process. It is the least damaging to your hair out of the three methods. It simply adds tiny color molecules to the cuticle of your hair without a dramatic change to your original hair color. With the molecules being small, it will escape the cuticles much faster making the new color fade after a couple weeks of shampoo washes.

Demi-Permanent Hair Color- With this method, it will contain no ammonia but have a little bit of peroxide in it. Demi-permanent hair coloring also lasts longer than the semi-permanent process and will last up to 8 to 12 weeks. This coloring method will coat each hair strand with the new color and create larger molecules in the hair cortex making it last as long as it does. The process can be perfect for those who constantly love changing their hair colors without damaging it badly.

After dying your hair with any these coloring methods, it will not revert to the condition your hair was in originally without help. It is important to keep your hair moisturized, avoid using hot tools, and use color protectant hair products when you have color treated hair. Lastly, your current hair shade, hair type and the condition it is in are factors that need to be taken into consideration when changing hair colors.
